Ferg's adds axe-throwing to bar games
ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) - A new kind of bar game combines two activities few would expect: Drinking and throwing a hatchet.
Ferg’s Sports Bar and Grill in Downtown St. Pete has opened Axes and Ales. It's one of few places in the Bay Area where you can play the sport.
Players say it’s like a very aggressive game of darts. Axe-throwing is a huge sport in Canada and is rapidly spreading south. Players are even trying to have it accepted as an Olympic sport.
However, the people at Ferg's are just there for the fun.
“It was different, I’ve never thrown an axe at a tree or a target,” said Gene Singleton, a patron at Ferg’s. “I was imagining it was an old boss' face.”
Michelle Simpson, who runs Axes and Ales, says players must be 18 years old, be wear closed-toe shoes -- and be sober.
“It’s great to see people put their phones down, play,” Simpson said. “They really get into it, it’s fun to watch and play.”
