Grandmother charged in baby's drowning death

NORTH PORT (FOX 13) - On November 16, just before 6 p.m., police say Robin Lee Florand carried her grandson Anakin David-James Ennis to the neighbor's house. The 4-month-old boy was not responding.

A neighbor helped give the baby CPR before he was rushed to the hospital, but Anakin David James Ennis later passed away. 

Police say Florand left baby Anakin in the bathtub unattended for nearly 10 minutes. The baby's mother wasn't home.

Anakin drowned in a couple inches of water. Investigators also allege they found the meth in the bathroom and in Florand's system.

"She has some family that lives here in North Port. She was babysitting and didn't do a very good job," said North Port Police spokesperson Josh Taylor. "This is nothing that most people would probably do while taking care of a child."

After a long investigation Florand was arrested in Lakeland, where she lives. Reports indicate she's been arrested some 13 times in Polk County, dating back to 2007.

The 44-year-old has now been charged with manslaughter.

"Very unfortunate situation, obviously, anytime a baby passes away," said Taylor.

Florand is being held without bond.
