Iconic St. Pete sign moves to sports bar
ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) - If you've driven past 16th Street and Central Avenue in St. Pete, you've noticed the iconic globe sign that stood outside of the former World Liquors store is no longer there.
Developers will be putting an apartment building in place of the store and Mark Ferguson, the owner of Ferg’s Sports Bar, has plans to restore and showcase the sign at his bar. Part of the sign sits behind Ferg’s in a parking lot.
"People are coming from all over, taking pictures of it when it's sitting down like this," Ferguson said.
The sign that stood for more than 50 years outside of World Liquors at 16th Street and Central Avenue. Before the liquor store, it hung with a different name painted on it, outside of a furniture store downtown.
When you add up the cost of purchasing, moving and reconstructing, Ferg’s is paying $25,000 for its future home at Ferg’s, on the corner of 13th Street and Central.
"It's a lot more work than I thought, but when we are done with it, it's going to be beautiful and it will be an iconic piece for St. Pete," Ferguson said.
Once it's standing up right "World Liquors" will be painted over, and changed to "Ferg's world famous."
