MacDill AFB warns of increased noise thanks to visiting planes

TAMPA (FOX 13) - Some very loud – and very tough – snowbirds will be making a racket over Tampa during the next two weeks.

The U.S. Air Force issued an advisory today warning that several A10-C Thunderbolt II aircraft will be “conducting a deployment exercise” around MacDill Air Force Base. Neighbors can expect "increased noise."  

The A-10s, which are better known by the nickname “Warthogs,” are straight-wing ground-support aircraft known particularly for their tank-killing capabilities.  

The Air Force says the Warthogs – which belong to the Indiana Air National Guard 122nd Fighter Wing’s 163rd Fighter Squadron – will be flying with KC-135 Stratotankers and C-130 Hercules aircraft out of MacDill.

“There is no cause for alarm as this is only an exercise,” the Air Force advisory stated.

The deployment is scheduled to begin today and last through February 2.

Of course, that won’t be the only loud noises in South Tampa during that time.  The sound of cannon fire will echo through the area during the children’s Gasparilla parade this weekend and the larger ‘grown-up’ parade next weekend.
