Man seen crawling in road struck, killed; search on for driver

Tampa police are searching for a driver who they say took off after hitting and killing a man late Wednesday night.

Around 11 p.m. Wednesday, officers found the man's body after responding to Crosstown Expressway near the intersection of West Gandy Boulevard and Bridge Street.

Tampa police say they have determined at least two vehicles were exiting the expressway when they hit the pedestrian. A witness told investigators the victim was crawling in the middle of the road moments before being hit. The victim was not wearing reflective gear and was dressed in all black.

Evidence was consistent to what witness’ claim as neither of the two vehicles involved sustained damage to the front bumpers, hoods, or windshields. Those drivers stayed on scene and were cooperative with police.

It is believed a third vehicle, a white four-door sedan, may have also struck the pedestrian. Investigators are looking to speak with that driver.

The name of the victim has not been released.
