WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama will hold a news conference this afternoon on the historic nuclear agreement with Iran that the president is now trying to sell to Congress and world leaders. Many lawmakers on Capitol Hill are skeptical that the accord will stop Tehran from developing a nuclear weapon. Yesterday, Obama spent much of the day phoning leaders in Europe and the Middle East. And today he's sending Vice President Joe Biden to Capitol Hill to meet with Democrats.
JERUSALEM (AP) — A spokesman for Israeli opposition leader Isaac Herzog says the center-left lawmaker will travel to Washington to discuss Israel's concerns about the Iranian nuclear deal. There is widespread objection in Israel to the deal. And Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that he'll lobby the U.S. Congress to reject it. A Herzog spokesman in Washington says the Israeli opposition leader will "explain what the problem is with the agreement" and discuss its security implications.
LUENEBURG, Germany (AP) — A 94-year-old former SS sergeant who served at the Auschwitz death camp has been convicted on 300,000 counts of accessory to murder. Oskar Groening (GROH'-nihng) was then sentenced to four years in prison. He testified at his trial in Germany that he guarded prisoners' baggage after they arrived at Auschwitz and collected money stolen from them. Prosecutors said that amounted to helping the death camp function.
FLAT GAP, Ky. (AP) — Rescue crews in Kentucky plan to resume their search this morning for six people missing in floodwaters. Two people already have been confirmed dead and authorities estimate that more than 150 homes have been destroyed. Yesterday, emergency workers went door-to-door in the hardest-hit neighborhoods, searching for people who might be trapped in their homes. Seventy-eight-year-old Herbert Hayden says while he and his wife were at a doctor's appointment, their mobile home was swept away.
KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) — Authorities in Florida say a 3-year-old boy has died after being found in a pool at Disney's Art of Animation Resort. Sheriff's deputies in Orange County say the boy somehow became separated from his parents at the hotel and was found in the pool last night. He was transported to Celebration Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
