A suspect is dead after firing at officers in Tampa, and a police shield reveals the dangers officers can face on the job.

Tampa police officers responded to a home for a domestic dispute call in the 3300 block of Cherokee Avenue sometime before 4 a.m. Thursday.

Tampa police spokesperson Stephen Hegarty says multiple officers were on scene when a man walked out to the front of the home, held up a gun and tried to fire a shot at them.

The gun reportedly did not go off, so Hegarty says the man went back into the home before walking out a second time and firing again.

That's when a bullet hit one of the Tampa police officer’s shields.

Officers returned fire, hitting and killing the man.

No officers were injured in the shooting, but when asked if this was a close call, Hegarty said seeing the damage to the shield was “scary.”

A woman was also involved in the domestic dispute. Hegarty says she had minor injuries and is expected to be OK.

The suspect has not yet been identified.
