Trial continues for man who allegedly killed girlfriend, tried to burn evidence
SARASOTA (FOX 13) - Sarasota prosecutors showed the jury a video of the last moments of Kristen Kelley's life.
Just minutes earlier, they were shown another video allegedly of defendant Michael Clark grabbing her arm as she tries to pull away.
Prosecutors say the two had a volatile relationship and were arguing the night Clark beat Kelley to death.
They also say Clark set his van on fire to cover up the murder.
Alvin Jenkins was driving on Interstate 75 in Sarasota County when he stopped to help Clark.
"I had to get him away from the burning van, so I took the blanket that I got from the truck and wrapped it around his wrist and dragged him approximately 10 to 15 feet," Jenkins told jurors.
Sarasota County Corrections Deputy Patricia Simonides stopped, too. She called 911 but couldn't get Clark to tell her anything.
"Are you injured, sir? Sir, what happened?" she is heard saying in the 911 call. "He has a belt around his neck."
Later, a detective asked Clark about that belt but he didn't have an answer.
The defense, meanwhile, argues Michael Clark is a victim, too.
Clark told police four Hispanic men attacked him and Kelley outside a convenience store and knocked him out. When he came to, his van was on fire with Kelley inside.
But prosecutors say Clark made the whole thing up.
Clark's attorney, Ronald Kurpiers made a big promise to the jury.
"You were told that there's no interaction with Hispanics. You folks are going to see the video. That's just not true," said Kurpiers.
The trial is expected to wrap up on Friday.
