Two young boys knocked on a stranger's door Thursday night because they could not go home.

The boys were cold and said they had been told to get out of the house and not come back until midnight.

Luckily, the person the boys went to called the Largo Police Department.

Officers arrived and talked to the two boys who are ages 9 and 5.

The brothers were only wearing jeans and light long sleeved shirts in the 54 degree weather Thursday night.

The older boy told officers that they had been kicked out of the house.

Officers went to their home address and found a woman, identified as Maryann Trotter. The police report states that Trotter was under the influence of some narcotic. As they spoke to Trotter, they noted she had slurred speech.

Trotter told officers that she was supposed to be watching the boys, but that they hadn't been home because they were at a friend's house. In the report, officers noted that she was not concerned that it was after 9:30pm and cold outside, but she had planned to send another sibling to look for them.

While they were interviewing Trotter, the mother, Alicia Batterly arrived at the home.

Officers noted in their report that Batterly smelled of alcohol as she spoke to them. During their interview with Batterly, she called a family member and refused to put down her phone to talk to them.

When officers took her phone away, she grabbed the officer with her phone to get it back.

Batterly said that she left the boys with Trotter while she went to the store and a local bar. When asked why the boys weren't at the home with Trotter, Batterly indicated that they were at a friend's house. She could not remember the location of the friend's house.

Both women were charged with two counts of neglect of a child. Batterly was also charged with resisting arrest and obstruction for the incident with her phone.

The boys were removed from the home by the Department of Children and Families.
