Tropical storm may form in Gulf, head toward FL

FOX 13 Meteorologist Dave Osterberg says the tropics are heating up, but he is only concerned about one area that will impact Bay Area weather next week. He says there is an area of low pressure in the western Caribbean that will meander over the Yucatan and move into the Gulf of Mexico, where the water is very warm making it the ideal climate for strengthening. Osterberg says the good news is there is a wind shear over the Gulf that will slow its development. However, he adds that most of the computer models show that it will become a tropical storm and stay a tropical storm that will bring a lot of rain to the west coast of Florida on Tuesday and Wednesday. If it does earn a name, the storm will be called Idalia.

Potential tropical system may impact Florida

FOX 13 Meteorologist Dave Osterberg has his eye on the tropics as we head into the heart of hurricane season. He is watching an area of moisture that?s sitting over Central America has a 50 percent chance of developing over the next week as it heads into the Caribbean and eventually the Gulf of Mexico. He says that while wind shear should keep it fairly weak, it could become a named storm. Regardless, the system will bring rain to central and South Florida next week. Two other disturbances are in the middle of the Atlantic and while Tropical Storm Franklin may gain hurricane strength as it moves into the Atlantic, it will not impact the Sunshine State.

Tropical Storm Franklin may become a hurricane

FOX 13 Meteorologist Jim Weber is watching several areas in the tropics. Tropical Storm Franklin has top winds of 40 miles an hour as it crosses the Dominican Republic. It is expected to gain strength, and possibly become a hurricane as it enters the Atlantic. Weber is also watching the remnants of Emily that has the possibility of reforming in the Atlantic. Another area Weber is looking at is in the Pacific Ocean that is moving over Central America and may eventually enter the Gulf of Mexico and develop as it hits warm water.
