Lightning hockey camps get more kids on the ice

The NHL season may be over, but the ice is still a hot place to be – at least in Wesley Chapel. The Tampa Bay Lightning are hosting their first-ever hockey camp for girls this week.

It’s the first of several camps the team is offering this summer. This one is for girls ages 7 to 15, and 44 participants signed up from all over the Sunshine State.

“It’s huge, it’s awesome. Just in girls alone, I believe the number is 37 percent growth from last year,” offered Kristen Bowness, the team’s community hockey coordinator.

“We were expecting somewhere around 20 and we got double that,” added Tampa Bay Lightning alum Jassen Cullimore, who helps coach the sessions.  “It’s been great.  In the last three years, we’ve had an increase of 80 percent as far as kids signing up to play hockey.”
