1 dead, 1 arrested in North Port shooting: Police

One man is dead, and another has been arrested after an argument turned to gunfire on Thursday night.

What we know:

North Port police said they found Zachary Lucas, 40, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds when they responded to a reported shooting shortly before 9:30 p.m. in the 8000 block of Rocliff Ave.

Lucas later died from his injuries.

Police say Lucas had gotten into an argument with 26-year-old Michael Reinel before gunfire erupted.

Reinel was arrested and charged with one count of homicide.

According to the North Port Police Department, Lucas and Reinel knew each other and the shooting was an isolated incident.

What we don't know:

It is unclear what the men were arguing about.

What they're saying:

"Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones affected by this tragic loss. Every life taken by violence is one too many, and our department is committed to seeking justice," stated North Port Police Chief Todd Garrison.

Local perspective:

While no homicide charges were recorded in North Port in 2024, police say this marks the second such incident in the early weeks of 2025.
