9-year-old killed in I-75 pileup in Hernando Co.
BROOKSVILLE (FOX 13) - A 9-year-old died in a crash that closed Interstate 75 in Hernando County Thursday.
Florida Highway Patrol said six vehicles were ensnared in the crash in the inside northbound lanes of I-75 near mile marker 302. The drivers were slowed or stopped by traffic backed up by another accident near MM 305.
FHP said a Hyundai Genesis, driven by 33-year-old Gregory Andriotis of Deltona, was going too fast to stop and rear-ended a Mazda CX5, setting off a chain reaction with a Nissan Sentra, a Jeep, a Dodge Avenger and a Volvo S60.
The 9-year-old passenger, who was sitting behind the Mazda's driver's seat, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other passengers in the Mazda -- a 35-year-old woman and 5-year-old girl -- were taken to St. Joseph's Hospital. The driver, 37-year-old Jordan Scherer of Riverview, was also taken to the hospital.
They were all wearing seat belts.
The driver of the Hyundai, Gregory Andriotis was also seriously injured. FHP said charges against him were pending.
Drivers of the other vehicles were not injured.
