A male species of bear, called a sloth bear, was rescued from a well in had fallen into in Tumkur, India.

Dozens of people banded together to rescue the animal from the 40-foot hole in the ground.

Rescuers from Wildlife SOS headed-up the two-hour operation on December 26.

The organization said that the dangerous rescue, carried out with help from the forestry department, took place on private agricultural field bordering a forest after the landowner raised the alarm.

Rescuers said that the animal was likely trying to reach honeycombs on the edge of the well, but slipped and fell.

Video footage posted by Wildlife SOS shows the sloth bear being sedated and then lifted from the well before being assessed and later released back into the wild.
