Beer Can Island's new owners explain proposed fees

TAMPA (FOX 13) - Officially it's called Pine Key, but locals know it as Beer Can Island. Late last year, when the island was purchased for $63,000, the new owners promised that it would remain "the People's Island." 

But some fans of the island were surprised to see a post on social media with a pricelist for yearly island passes, ranging from $30 to $60, depending on when they're purchased. 

"When I saw the charges, it kind of took me back. I'm going to find a new place to go," said James Sniffen, a retired Marine who visits the island with his family. 

Tiki Bay Island LLC, the island's owners, says there has been some confusion. They say people will still be able to visit the island for free. 

"It was put out a little too quickly," said James Wester of Tiki Bay Island. "If you want to come, you can come for free, but if you want to use the bathrooms, you need a season pass for those." 

The company says the passes are also required for camping. They say pass holders will get discounts on food and drinks that are now being served on the island. 

The passes will be required beginning July 1. Wester says beer and liquor is now being served at a 
floating bar they've put in place at Beer Can Island.
