Authorities are asking for the public’s help in locating a vehicle that struck and killed a bicyclist on Ulmerton Road Wednesday morning.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the suspect vehicle was traveling westbound on Ulmerton Road near 58th Street North when it struck a bicyclist who was traveling in the bike lane.

The crash occurred at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The bicyclist, who was identified as 62-year-old Robert Shepherd from St. Petersburg, died at the scene of the crash.

Authorities do not know why the suspect vehicle struck the bicyclist, who was riding in the same direction as the vehicle in the bike lane.

Shortly after the crash, a third vehicle, an SUV driven by 30-year-old Michael Flores, collided with the bicycle and suspect vehicle. Flores remained at the scene and spoke with authorities.

FHP is searching for the driver of the unknown vehicle that struck the bicyclist.

Troopers later discovered vehicle parts left on the scene that they believe are from the suspect vehicle. The side mirror found on the scene could be from a 2003 to 2008 Pontiac Vibe, Toyota Matrix or Toyota Corrola.
