Deputies warn of IRS scam in Bay area
LAKELAND (FOX 13) - Deputies are putting out a warning about a scam that’s targeting taxpayers in the Bay area.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office says it all starts with a phone call from someone who will claim to work for the IRS and demand payment of owed taxes.
They might also threaten jail time for not paying up, and then call back claiming to be local police.
Investigators say any call like that is most definitely a scam, as the IRS never makes phone calls or sends emails about taxes.
Legitimate correspondence with the IRS takes place solely via the U.S. Postal Service.
The Sheriff’s Office says elderly residents and immigrants are most vulnerable to these scams, and urge locals to look out for their loved ones.
The IRS urges those who do receive calls likes these to report them immediately.
