Hillsborough deputy opens fire at fleeing suspect

A manhunt is underway in Hillsborough County following a deputy-involved shooting.

According to the sheriff's office, the deputy fired his gun during a traffic stop on Woodrow Wilson Street, near Thonotosassa road in Plant City.

The incident took place around 10:45 p.m. on Wednesday night, as the deputy was en route to an aggravated battery call. That deputy spotted the suspect on the road, and pulled him over. As the deputy approached the suspect, the driver backed up and rammed the car into the front end of the deputy's patrol car.

The deputy was knocked to the ground and then shot at the car as it drove away.

The car was later found by deputies near the intersection of Sammons Road and S. Woodrow Wilson Street in Plant City. The suspect however, was not found.

The deputy involved in the shooting received minor injuries, and was treated by EMS crews at the scene. He is expected to be OK.

The search for the suspect continues.  Deputies did not release any identification.
