Hurricane stops adopted children before trip home

TAMPA (FOX 13) - Nancy Filsaime is a busy grandma to two grandchildren, but recently she decided to adopt two more children from her native Haiti.

Her husband, Simon went to pick them up, but now he and the children are trapped in the capital of Port Au Prince by Hurricane Matthew.

Simon sent video on his cell phone Tuesday morning. 

"I'm praying for him," says Nancy. "That's the only thing I can do right now, and just hope everything's going to be ok."  

But the storm has canceled all travel and it's not clear when the family will be reunited.

Meanwhile, Dr. Sylvia Campbell of Tampa has been on more than 30 medical missions to Haiti with the non-profit Village Partners International and Palma Ceia Presbyterian Church.

She says Haiti's medical needs have always been staggering, especially after the massive earthquake of 2010.

Now Hurricane Matthew threatens to make things even worse.  

"They've been hit so much over the past few years with so many tragedies," says Campbell. "These people are still living with tarps after the earthquakes and now they're just going to be beaten down again."

It's a worry for people with loved ones in harm's way.

"What I'm hoping for is for him to get home with the kids," says Filsaime.

There are hopes and prayers as disaster hits Haiti once again.
