Man killed in East Bradenton shooting

The Manatee County Sheriff's Office says a man was killed Wednesday in a shooting that was likely drug related.

Deputies say they were called to 1027 61st Avenue Drive East just before 3 p.m. Wednesday for a report of gunshots. When investigators arrived, they found a male victim slumped over inside a van further down the street. Investigators have since identified the victim as 26-year-old Kenye Cooper, Sr.

According to investigators, Cooper and another man arrived at a home on the street and went inside to start a fight with the men inside. Those two men began shooting, forcing Cooper and the other man to run from the home.

Cooper jumped into a car where he was later found dead. The man with him has not been identified and was not at the scene when investigators got there.

Deputies say they have interviewed the two men in the home, Napoleon Hale and Brett Simmons. The men told investigators they were playing video games when Cooper and his friend came inside to fight them. No charges have been filed.

Community leader Angela Willett says the violence is common in her neighborhood and she's sick of witnessing the dangerous crimes.

"They need to stop the drugs, they need to stop the gun violence. They need to put down the guns first of all, because that is no solution," said Willett.
