Moffitt director: Ready to lead national war on cancer

TAMPA (FOX 13) - The H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa is one of the best hospitals in the country.  So when center director Dr. Thomas Sellers heard the president say, "Let's cure cancer once and for all," he stood up and cheered. 

Is beating cancer like going to the moon, though?  Well, Dr. Sellers says curing cancer may be more complicated.  That's because cancer is not a single disease.  It's many diseases.  In fact, lung cancer alone is many separate diseases. 

The good news is that we are getting a handle on those diseases, figuring out what they respond to:  What works?  What doesn't?

Already, Moffitt has been in touch with Vice President Joe Biden -- an hour-long conference call about what goes on at Moffitt, the treatments they are working on, their research with other facilities. 

Dr. Sellers says Moffitt is proud to be a leader in this cancer-fighting game.  "Stepping to the plate and doing what we can to push a national agenda that will mean something."
