'Mystery' ice chunk crashes through roof of Florida home

A large chunk of ice fell from the sky and crashed through the roof of a Central Florida home, officials said.

What we know:

Firefighters responded to a residence on Seattle Trail in Flagler County after a neighbor reported hearing a loud noise and finding ice on the ground. No one was injured.

What we don't know:

Authorities are unsure of the ice’s origin and have contacted the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for further investigation.

What they're saying:

"Most of the ice was retrieved from the hole and the hole was covered with a tarp," said Joseph Bober of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

Mike Bishop lives in the neighborhood and said he heard the crashing ice.

"Couldn't believe it — never heard of it in my life! First time," he told us.

Aviation expert Shem Malmquist said these events are rare but happen more often than one would expect.

"The area under the mast can develop a ball of ice, and at certain points — that can just dislodge and fall," he explained. "It happens a few times a year."

A spokesperson from the FAA elaborated on how such events may occur.

"Water may leak out and form ice on the outside of an aircraft. As the aircraft descends and the temperature warms, the ice can melt and fall off," the spokesperson told FOX 35 News. "When the FAA gets reports about such incidents, the agency tries to determine whether the ice could have come from an aircraft and then identify aircraft potentially involved."

Paul and Sabrina Gomez were sitting in the backyard of their Patterson home at around 9:30 p.m. when the projectile came out of nowhere and left a gaping hole in the roof. The couple were seated at a table less than 12 feet from the impacted area. The family rushed to the front of their house, where they took a video of pieces of ice spread out all over the driveway.
