New light, crosswalk installed on deadly Hillsborough Ave. stretch

TAMPA (FOX 13) - The death toll is chilling. Three people have been killed on Hillsborough Avenue just east of  22nd Avenue in the last four years.

A new traffic light and crosswalk is aimed at hopefully preventing further tragedies.

"I am happy they put this up because now it's easier to get from point A to point B- to get some groceries and food and whatever we need," said Alfred Mondragon of the new installation.

The light is scheduled to begin flashing amber this week to give drivers a heads up that it's there. Then, next Monday, the plan is to make it fully functional.

The new light comes after several deadly incidents on the roadway.

Recently, a 58-year-old man  slipped off the median and got hit by a delivery truck.

Two years ago, two sisters were crossing the street and both were hit. One, a 15-year-old Middleton student, was killed. Her sister survived.

Four years ago, another 15-year-old girl was hit and killed while crossing the street.
