NTSB: Another plane taking off when crash happened

The NTSB began its investigation into the circumstances surrounding a deadly crash at Peter O. Knight Airport on Davis Island Friday.

A senior air safety investigator with the NTSB said his team had started the process of investigating the crash that killed two people, who have not been identified by officials.

The plane, which was headed for Pensacola, crashed during takeoff and burst into flames.

The NTSB said the airport does not have air traffic controllers to guide pilots during takeoff and landing. There was, however, a second plane taking off at the same time.

The NTSB said it was too early to tell if the timing of the takeoffs was a coincidence or possibly related to the crash. The representative also said there were eye witnesses and surveillance video of the incident, but the video would not be released to the public until the investigation came closer to uncovering a cause.

The initial investigation was put on hold Saturday morning as storms with lightning moved across the Bay Area.

The Peter O. Knight airport authority said the runways would be closed until further notice.
