Rabies alert issued for Hillsborough County
LUTZ (FOX 13) - A rabies alert has been issued in Lutz after two raccoons tested positive for the disease. The raccoons were found near Shady Pines Drive.
According to the Florida Department of Health, all residents should be aware that rabies is present among wild animals in the area and domestic animals are at risk if they have not been vaccinated.
Rabies is a disease of the nervous system and is fatal to warm blooded animals
and humans.
This is the second time rabies has been reported in Hillsborough County this year. The first case was reported in late April, also in Lutz.
The rabies alert will stay in effect for 60 days, and affects all areas surrounding Shady Pines Drive in Lutz, with boundaries at Lake Bryant to the north, Highway 41 to the east, Lake Magdalene Boulevard to the south, and Indian Mound Road to the west.
