Sculpture of beached sperm whale surprises Madrid locals

Early morning commuters in Madrid thought they saw a beached sperm whale. Or, to be exact, a convincing replica of one.

Locals were greeted with the unusual sight as they crossed the city’s Puente de Segovia on Friday, September 14. Below them was the statue of a realistic whale.

The whale is an installation by the Belgian art collective Captain Boomer, who have performed similar stunts around Europe in the past several years, including in Paris in 2017.

Captain Boomer say the whale is intended at raising awareness for the environment. The Madrid whale is part of the city’s Ciuda Distrito cultural festival.
