Students publish book on human rights

ST. PETE BEACH (FOX 13) - Local students and teachers collaborate on a very special project.

Nicole Darbois' 9th grade Avid class at Boca Ciega High School is always doing interesting experiments - like stopping an egg from cracking, while dropping it 3 feet into a paper bag.

But perhaps the most amazing lesson learned this school year was human rights and the book they published together.

"It was a pretty hard process but, I just focus on what I wanted to write about," Lula Burke, a student said.

The students studied and did research for the civil rights book.

"We wanted them to see what happens when you put a little hard work into something you know it can have a great final outcome," Nicole Darbois, a Boca Ciega High School Avid teacher said.

The book has stories, poems, and opinions about the plight of human rights.

"It didn't seem real at first that I  actually was gonna be writing in a book cause I never thought I would be doing something like that," Stepvanie Copponi, a student said.

The project took two months to finish.

"I'm like surprised and very thankful for it," Rontonio Scott Jr., a student said.

"It's a tangible product of their hard work and also they are published authors now," Nicole said.

An academic achievement that they can all be proud of.
