Super boat races attract thousands to Clearwater
CLEARWATER (FOX13) - Thousands of people will head to Clearwater beach Sunday for the fastest show on the water: the Super Boat National Championship races.
The festivities started Friday and continue on Sunday, as the super boats hit the water at noon for the first race.
"We're here to go battle with some very, very fast boats out there," said Marc Granet, a 14-time champion with the Miss Geico team. "It will be an absolute sight to see.”
The annual event has grown bigger as more and more people gather to see the super boats hit nearly 200 miles per hour on the water.
But the weekend isn't all about the impressive show; fans line up for the event, bringing a lot of money for Clearwater and Pinellas County.
"More boats and more fans and more sponsors and more people have gotten involved," said Rodrick Cox, spokesperson for the Super Boat Championship. "It's going to have probably an $11 to $15 million economic impact here in the community."
