An officer from the Largo Police Department was involved in a shooting during a traffic stop at the
Wawa Store at 1215 North Missouri Avenue at 5:55 p.m. tonight.

The suspect driver attempted to pin the officer between his vehicle and the gas pumps.

"A stop was initiated in which they began some sort of encounter with this gentleman, at which time he got back into the vehicle, and he began acting violently with his vehicle", said Lt. Randall Chaney with the Largo Police Department.

Officer Matthew Steiner, a seven year veteran of the department, fired several shots in self-defense, hitting the suspect.

Officer Steiner was transported to Morton Plant Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect, who has not been identified, was taken to Largo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
