TPA opts out of private security program, keeps federal TSA screening

TAMPA, Fla. - Tampa International Airport has chosen to keep its checkpoint screening operations exclusively with federal TSA officers after completing an evaluation of a private screening program.

What we know:

TSA officials approached TPA leaders earlier this year about TSA Gold+, a program giving the agency oversight of a private screening company instead of federal officers. Airport officials opted in to review the model to prevent future government shutdown disruptions, improve access to screening technology, and enhance the passenger experience. 

After an extensive review over several months that covered security, workforce, technology, financial, and legal considerations, airport leaders elected not to adopt the Gold+ program.

TPA officials did not state whether they will consider private screening programs again in the future if federal operations change.

"We approached Gold+ carefully and deliberately, with a focus on our passengers, employees, airline partners, and long-term operational excellence," TPA CEO Michael Stephens said. "We are thankful to the TSA for bringing us the opportunity to learn more about a program with the potential to enhance operational resiliency and innovation, and to reach an informed decision." 

Stephens added that the airport has worked closely with its local TSA team through record passenger growth, severe weather, federal funding disruptions, and peak travel periods, and looks forward to continuing the partnership.
