Two years after teen killed by car, new sidewalk at Tenoroc High

AUBURNDALE (FOX 13) - The family of Enrique Hernandez say it's been a long time coming. Just in time for the new school year, a sidewalk opened on Old Dixie Highway near Tenoroc High School in Polk County.

Enrique was a senior at the school. On August 21, 2013, he missed the school bus and had to walk to school. With no sidewalks, he was forced to walk on the side of the road. That's when a car struck and killed him.

Ever since then, his family and others in the community lobbied county officials for a sidewalk. Two years after construction started, the sidewalk is now complete.

"We've thought about and talked about it in our family," said Anally Hernadez, Enrique's sister. "We think he's actually proud of us. It's not like tears of sadness. It would be tears of joy. He'd be happy. If this hadn't happened what else would we have had? There could have been more accidents there."

Anally is now a junior at Tenoroc High School. She has received many "thank you's" from students.

She says the next step is to push for streetlights and crosswalks along Old Dixie Highway.
