Unstable Pasco sinkhole delays clean-up efforts
LAND O' LAKES (FOX 13) - Pasco County officials are expected to announce the cleanup efforts for the massive sinkhole that opened up in Land O' Lakes on Thursday.
A press conference will take place Thursday morning at the Pasco County Emergency Operations Center.
The sinkhole destroyed homes and prompted evacuations from Ocean Pines Drive, turning possessions into debris.
So far, the 50-foot-deep opening has swallowed a car, boat, septic tank and hot tub. The ground remains unstable as water levels drop and sand dries out, causing top soil to crumble. According to Pasco County officials, ground stability concerns have delayed the arrival of heavy equipment needed to fill in the sinkhole. Originally, officials were hoping to begin the clean-up later this week.
Officials are taking steps to prevent public health issues. Administrators are securing bids from contractors to help remove debris and possible contaminants.
