USF president member of board at company raided by ICE

TAMPA (FOX 13) - The University of South Florida is responding to questions regarding its president's role in a company raided Tuesday by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

ICE says its agents arrested 146 on alleged immigration violations at the Fresh Mark meat processing facility in Salem, Ohio.

The University of South Florida confirms its president, Judy Genshaft sits on Fresh Mark's board of directors.

A representative from USF's Media Relations Office said questions should be directed to Fresh Mark, "as this issue does not involve university business," but added Genshaft "has no involvement in [Fresh Mark's] daily operations."

ICE says the raid was part of a yearlong investigation into Fresh Mark for allegedly hiring illegal immigrants at its Salem, Ohio facility. 

Those who were arrested will be detained in facilities in Michigan and Ohio while awaiting deportation, ICE said.

A 24-hour toll-free detainee locator hotline is available for family members of those arrested. The hotline operates in English and Spanish: 1-888-351-4024.

According to the Associated Press, immigration agents arrested 114 people at a garden and landscaping company in northern Ohio two weeks ago. Authorities said they planned to charge workers for crimes including identity theft and tax evasion.
