Want to take part in lobster season? Here's what to know before you dive

Lobster season could be described as an underwater scavenger hunt, of sorts. The season runs from Aug. 6 to March 31 and is a big deal for the Florida Keys.

There are people coming down for both hobby and competition. Whatever it may be, it also comes with a list of rules.

What they're saying:

Ashley Hudson from Conch Republic Divers in Tavernier says the season "regulates the time for people to go hunt legal lobsters."

To take part in this activity, you have to have a Florida fishing license with a lobster tag to hunt lobsters. You are only allowed to capture six lobsters per day, per person with this.

"Lobsters like shallow areas," Hudson said. "They actually come out at night and they eat the seagrass and then during the day they typically just tuck away so they go from where the seagrass beds are and then they kind of just scurry over to whatever the first little covering is."

A tickle stick and a snare are good to use to capture lobster. When you capture the lobster, you need to make sure that the carcass is 3.5 inches or longer.

Hudson says that harvesting lobster is the cheapest way to eat in the Florida Keys.
