The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating a deputy-involved shooting in Hernando County.

Hernando County deputies were called to assist the Brooksville Police Department for a report of a suicidal woman who had barricaded herself inside a home early Sunday afternoon.

When officers arrived they found that woman pointing a shotgun towards officers.

"Initial reports are that she aimed the shotgun at several deputies, they of course fired upon this individual and we believe she was struck by that gunfire," said Sheriff Al Nienhuis with the Hernando Co. Sheriff's Office.

Witnesses were at Hernando County High School’s baseball field practicing. They took video of the incident on their phone.

“It’s almost on campus, it’s crazy.” Said one those witnesses.

The woman, who has not been identified, was airlifted to a local hospital where she is being treated for non-life threatening injuries. It’s unclear at this time whether or not she fired her shotgun.

“They were sitting there trying to talk her down,” said another witness.

Sheriff Nienhuis believes 3 deputies were involved in the shooting, but the investigating is still ongoing.

“The deputies will be placed on administrative leave as is routine, they’re always placed on administrative leave with something like this until FDLE can at least do the preliminary investigation," he said.
