Wrong-way driver who hit deputy sentenced to 3.5 years

TAMPA (FOX 13) - He rammed a deputy's cruiser while driving the wrong way on Highway 301, and Thursday he learned what his punishment would be for the crime. 

Derek Hyde pleaded guilty to driving the wrong way and refusing to stop back in March. He was sentenced Thursday, to three and a half years in prison. 

Frantic drivers called 911, and officers reached him quickly. One of those was Deputy Stine, who was trying to block Hyde's path. But Hyde didn't stop. He slammed into the deputy's car. 

"He looked directly at him and rammed right into his vehicle," a prosecutor told the judge.

Deputy Stine said in a deposition, it took him more than a week to recover from soreness caused by the crash.

Hyde was no stranger to law enforcement. His past troubles range from domestic violence, to assault with a deadly weapon, and grand theft. Now he is off to state prison for his latest bad behavior.
