2 detained after Zephyrhills High lockdown one week after man arrested for attacking teen in bathroom

Zephyrhills High School was on a brief lockdown on Thursday after two 17-year-olds were found on campus that shouldn't have been there, according to deputies.

What we know:

The Pasco Sheriff's Office said the lockdown was issued after the school's staff found and confronted the two teens before they ran off from the campus. Deputies said staff at the school activated their "active threat plan" out of an abundance of caution while authorities worked to find them.

"They immediately activated the active threat plan, so they went into active threat procedures, which is exactly what I would want them to do as a principal, given the situation that occurred last week, and so they took every precaution necessary to make sure that that campus was safe," said Dr. Toni Zetzsche, a spokesperson for the school district. "The teachers and the support staff, they want it to be a safe place for the students. So I think the message is, talk with your students and continue to report any suspicious activity that you see and be very cautious on opening doors or welcoming people in those you know. Those gates are there for a reason and those safety measures are in place to keep our kids safe."

The situation at Zephyrhills High School was resolved, and the teens are now in custody, according to Pasco deputies.

Officials said they were both arrested for disruption of school function and resisting an officer in connection with this incident. The sheriff's office told FOX 13 that they were students who were enrolled in the district's dropout prevention program and were not supposed to be on campus.

Deputies said the school transitioned back to normal operations, and the sheriff's office assisted with a controlled dismissal.

What we don't know:

Pasco County deputies have not released the identity of the two teens who were found and confronted on campus.

The backstory:

Thursday's incident comes one week after a 20-year-old man was charged with sneaking onto Zephyrhills High School's campus to rob students before eventually attacking a teenager in a bathroom, investigators said.

According to the arrest affidavit, Pasco County deputies said Keyshawn Gardner was wearing a ski mask when he jumped a fence to get onto the high school's campus. A district spokesperson told FOX 13 another student mistakenly let Gardner into the school, thinking he was supposed to be there.

Alicia Hussey said her 16-year-old son was in the bathroom when Gardner entered and began demanding people's belongings. She said her son refused to hand over his items and tried to defend other students from Gardner, leading to a fight in the bathroom.

"He was on campus for a total of 12 minutes from the time he got in and did all that and then left," Hussey said, adding, "it could have been so much worse."

The district told FOX 13 on Wednesday, although this situation appears to be a student's error and not a gap in security, the school is still reviewing its protocol.

"It just reminds you to keep reteaching those procedures, remind students, staff, parents, everyone, that those safety procedures are in place for a reason." said Zetzsche. "Anything that happens on our campus, the smallest safety issue, you know, to the biggest safety issue at all, it all stings. It all makes us reevaluate our procedures."

Pasco deputies said they tracked down Gardner at his home later that day after the first incident, where he was hiding in a bathtub. He's charged with robbery and burglary with battery.
