Florida power outages: Thousands of households impacted by winter system

As a rare winter system continues to impact northern Florida and the Panhandle on Wednesday, bringing historic snowfall and frigid temperatures in some areas, power outages are affecting residents.

According to PowerOutage.us, more than 15,692 households were without power as of 9:30 p.m. 

The hardest-hit counties include Wakulla, with over 5,083 homes without power, Santa Rosa with over 2,357 household without power, and Leon, where more than 1,180 are affected.

Ready.gov shared the following tips when dealing with a power outage:

  • Keep freezers and refrigerators closed.
  • Use a generator, but ONLY outdoors and away from windows.
  • Do not use a gas stove or oven to heat your home.
  • Disconnect appliances and electronics to avoid damage from electrical surges.
  • Have alternate plans for refrigerating medicines or using power-dependent medical devices.
  • Check with local officials about heating and cooling locations open near you.
