Sheriff Judd outspoken as state makes decision on arming teachers

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd was vocal today about his feelings towards a controversial bill moving through the state legislature that would allow for armed teachers in the classroom.

The bill was passed in the state Senate Tuesday.

The sheriff supports allowing trained volunteer teachers to carry in schools.

“We wanted to give every school district and school the extra tool to protect children,” he said.

He was part of the Parkland Commission, which investigated last year's Valentine's Day massacre and ultimately made safety recommendations including arming some teachers.

However, multiple districts, most recently Manatee County, have taken their own votes to say they will not allow teachers to carry guns.

Sheriff Judd said: Shame on those counties.

“Shame on you for wanting to take a tool off the table that will keep children safe,” the sheriff said.

The bill still needs to be approved by the House and then needs Gov. DeSantis’ signature to become law.
