Students say thanks to cancer center staff

ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) - The first-grade students in Cydney Tuten's class are learning more than their ABC's at St. Petersburg Christian School.

"I learned to give stuff to people," student Piper White said.

"These students are learning what it means to give back to their community," teacher Cydney Tuten explained.

The students brought in snacks to deliver to doctors and nurses at Florida Cancer Specialists and Moffitt Cancer Center. Their act of kindness was done to show gratitude for treating two of their teachers who are battling cancer. 

"Just because they're kids doesn't mean that they can't have an impact in their community and make a difference,” principal Amy Kraus offered.

"It was very touching," said Tuten.  "I think that the whole thing has been an overwhelming experience of support." 

Lori Kurek, another teacher at the school, also has cancer. "They came in and visited me in the hospital when I was getting one of my chemo treatments and brought goodies for my nurses and doctors that have just been amazing."

The effort is having a positive effect on the students.

"I felt proud of myself," said Malachi Crawford, "because I did something good for my teacher."

Teacher Brian Langlois lost his son to cancer earlier this year. 

"When they brought over the baskets to just thank them for all that they had done, it was just really touching for us."

"We want our students to recognize that there is value in giving to other people," Principal Kraus added.
