Florida lawmakers propose getting rid of unanimous jury recommendations for the death penalty

Florida lawmakers have filed a bill to get rid of a requirement that a jury must be unanimous in order for a convicted criminal to be sentenced to death. If passed, it would allow judges in the state to impose the death penalty if 8 out of 12 jurors agree. The issue has gained momentum after a South Florida jury sentenced Parkland shooter Nikolas Cruz to life in prison because 3 of the jurors voted against the death penalty.

Gabby Petito's family backs proposed 'lethality assessment' law in Utah to better screen for domestic violence

The Petito family is lobbying lawmakers for a bill that, if passed, would create what's called a "Lethality Assessment Protocol" to help screen for risks of domestic violence. It comes less than two years after officers in Moab, Utah decided to separate Gabby and Brian Laundrie for a night rather than issue a domestic violence citation or investigate further.

A man has filed a defamation lawsuit against a Florida sheriff who posts weekly "Wheel of Fugitive" videos on social media, saying that he wasn't a fugitive when his name and image appeared several times in 2021 in the sheriff's posts inspired by the long-running TV game show "Wheel of Fortune."
