Defendant pleads guilty in cab driver's death

John Dooley had been a taxi driver for years in Tampa, but a pick up on December 8, 2013 would be his last.

Prosecutors say defendant Devante Bell and two other accomplices would rob and kill the 51-year-old driver.

Prosecutors say Bell called for a taxi that day  and planned to rob Dooley.  Once in the cab, co-defendant Landrick Edwards shot Dooley dead.  The two and another man stole his money and his cell phone.

Bell was arrested days later and confessed to police.

Nearly three years later Bell agreed to plead guilty to a lesser charge of second degree murder in exchange for 25 years in prison.  Bell also agreed to cooperate in the investigation against his co-defendant Landrick Edwards.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty in that case.

The third man involved in the murder has never been charged.
