DeSantis calls for guns, ammo sales tax holiday in proposed state budget
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Guns, ammunition and related items may be cheaper this summer if Governor Ron DeSantis’ proposed budget is approved.
Why you should care:
Late Sunday night, Florida’s governor proposed a $115.6B budget for the 2025-2026 fiscal year that, among other things, calls for a new sales-tax holiday on guns and ammunition.
The "Second Amendment Summer" sales tax holiday between Memorial Day and the Fourth of July would temporarily remove sales taxes on ammunition, firearms and related items.
The new tax holiday would save shoppers an estimated $8M, according to the governor’s office.

- "Freedom Month" sales tax holiday in July covering many items for outdoor recreation along with tickets to certain events and attractions. Gov. DeSantis says families could save $82 million.
- 14-day back-to-school sales tax holiday on clothes, school supplies, educational materials and computers.
- Two 14-day disaster preparedness tax holidays covering items ranging from batteries to pet supplies, along with generators costing $3,000 or less.
- Week-long ‘Tool Time’ sales tax holiday aimed at saving workers up to $18 million
- Two-month marine fuel tax holiday to save boaters 29.5 cents per gallon.
The Legislature has the task of voting on the state budget and sending it to the governor's desk during its 60-day legislative session, which begins March 4.
