Three people, including a young boy, were rescued from the water on Lido Key this afternoon.

According to the Sarasota County Fire Department, the rescue happened in the 400 block of Benjamin Franklin Drive.

Lifeguards dealt with rough surf all day, enough so that a red flag warning was in effect for swimmers. The three that had to be rescued were swimming outside of the posted lifeguard zone. Despite this, lifeguards did not hesitate to respond.

"We always advise people to stay close to lifeguard stands and be mindful of the swimming conditions," said Mike Sullivan, acting Battalion Chief for the Sarasota County Fire Department.

A 10-year-old boy was injured badly enough to be flown to All Children’s Hospital. Two adult patients, a man and a woman, were taken by ambulance to Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

The fact that there were multiple rescues did not surprise people on the beach.

"It was defiantly really scary," said Kristen Kruss, a Lido Beach visitor. "I think it's really sad we were in the water earlier, it couldn't been one of us.

There is no word on the conditions of the people rescued Monday afternoon.
