An earthquake, followed by a tropical storm, devastated remote areas of Haiti, where residents have struggled for years to overcome repeated natural disasters.

Grace drenched earthquake-damaged Haiti on Monday, threatening to dump up to 15 inches of rain on a landscape where people are huddling in fields and searching for survivors. Fred weakened after hitting Florida, and Henri formed around Bermuda.

A strengthening Tropical Storm Fred arrived in Florida Monday afternoon, bringing rain, wind, and the threat of storm surge. The center of the storm made landfall near Cape San Blas in the Panhandle around 2:15 p.m. local time.

Three tropical systems were churning Monday in the Atlantic basin and threatening to impact the U.S. Gulf Coast, some Caribbean islands including earthquake-damaged Haiti, and the island territory of Bermuda.

As Fred nears Florida, forecasters are keeping an eye on another disturbance out in the Atlantic that could become Tropical Storm Grace very soon.

One of those flood-prone areas is around the Myakka River. Friday night, water levels were OK, but if a storm rolls through, there are concerns the river won't be able to handle a lot of extra water.
