As Hurricane Milton works its way toward Florida, here's what people in Highlands County need to know.

Highlands County Evacuations:

Starting at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, a voluntary evacuation order will go into effect for all residents of mobile home parks, RV parks and anyone living in low-lying areas. 

Highlands County Shelters:

All shelters will open at 8 a.m. on Wednesday: 

  • Avon Park: Avon Park Rec Center, 207 E. State St., Avon Park, 33825 (Pet friendly)
  • Sebring: Alan Jay Arena, 781 Magnolia Ave., Sebring, 33870, at the Highlands County Fairgrounds
  • Lake Placid: Lake Placid High School, 202 Green Dragon Drive, Lake Placid 33852

A special needs shelter will open at:

  • Bert J. Harris Jr. Agricultural Center, 4509 George Blvd., Sebring, 33875

Highlands County Sandbags:

There are no sandbag locations.

Highlands County Schools:

All schools and district offices will be closed from Tuesday, Oct. 8 to Friday, Oct. 11.
